Spa Maintenance from the Nova Spa user.

I don't just sell Nova Spa, I use it myself.  I have been using Spa Magic and now Nova Spa since
April of 2006 and have seen how well it works.  Having never owned a hot tub, I spent a lot of time on
the Internet researching what I should use and how much chemical to use to keep my spa clean and
healthy. This is when I found the product called Spa Magic.  Being a new spa owner, I thought it
would be a good time to see if the product would work and if not, I can always switch with no real
extra expense.
Since I had a brand new spa from the factory, I decided I didn't need to use the Penetrating Spa
Cleanser to clean the hot tub.  Following the instructions from Spa Magic, I used baking soda to
increase the pH to the 7.8 to 8.4 level and added the Spa Magic.   I have used very little chlorine or
shock products since using Nova Spa Water Conditioner, and have had no problems with excessive
bacteria.

Cloudy water
I have found that while the Nova Spa does inhibit the growth bacteria, the water will become
cloudy at times from the oils, lotions, deodorants, dirt, dead skin cells, etc, that get brought in to the
hot tub.  There are 2 solutions for cloudy water.  The first is using a shock product to oxidize the
organics in the water.  Nova Spa is compatible with chlorine shock, but we recommend a non-
chlorine shock for those with chemical sensitivity.  The second solution is adding a
water clarifier as
needed to clear up the water.  It typically takes about 2 days for the filters to remove the
contaminants, and oils may take more work.  Some water clarifiers work by allowing the very small
particles in the water to cling to the each other and then the filter can remove them from the water.
SeaKlear Spa is a good one.  Therefore, it becomes very important for the filter to be cleaned on a
regular basis.  I will rinse and / or change the filter more often when using the clarifier.   Some water
clarifiers seem to cause foam when used with air bubbles and will leave scum at the water line.   I
recommend an enzyme clarifier because the enzymes break down the organic contaminants into
harmless components like water and carbon dioxide.  These work great on eliminating the scum and
typically don't cause foam.   If foam occurs when using the clarifier, turn off the air jets for a few
hours will help reduce the foam issue.  Use the clarifiers at the first hint of cloudiness or in weekly
doses to keep your water clear and looking great.
Occasionally the water may get a green tint.  This most likely is caused by the minerals or metals in
the water.   I have been told that a dose of chlorine will normally clear up the water.  Since chlorine is
compatible with Nova Spa, it will not hurt the enzymes.  The
EcoONE Pre-filter will also help with this
issue by removing the minerals and metals when filling your spa.

Filter maintenance
Most manufacturers recommend cleaning your filters weekly.  I have been doing them between 1
week and 2 weeks, and realize that if I did them weekly I would have clearer water.  I use about 1 to 2
ounces of the Penetrating Spa Cleanser to remove the organic materials from the filter.  Rinse the
filter to remove the loose particles.  Soak the filter in a bucket with the Penetrating Spa Cleanser in
cold water for an hour or more and then rinse the filter again with hot water.  I like to leave the filter in
the cleaner overnight.  The filter manufacturers recommend letting the filter dry before reinstalling.
It is also a good idea to clean the underside of the spa cover to remove any contaminants that might
drip back into the tub.

Sanitizing
I work for the wastewater facility in Silverthorne, Colorado and have the means to test my spa water
for bacteria.  I have tested the spa water several times now, including at the end of 3 months of Nova
Spa use. View my
personal test results from my most recent testing.  Each time the test showed
negative results for bacteria.  I have also tried the
WaterSafe Rapid Bacteria Test Kits and have yet to
have a positive test result.   Nova Spa is a maintenance product designed to inhibit the growth
bacteria similarly to chlorine at  5 PPM.  It is not a disinfectant or sanitizer.  Nova Spa enzymes work
by removing the sources of food for the bacteria. Without food the bacteria cannot grow or
reproduce.  You should use a shock product with Nova Spa to reduce the potential of bacteria in the
spa.  The shock products are designed to give you quick results by oxidizing the organics in the
water.   Nova Spa is compatible with chlorine shock products, but we recommend the non chlorine
shock for people with chemical sensitivity.

pH, Testing, etc
Once you set your pH at 7.8 to 8.4, Nova Spa will maintain your pH, so testing for pH and chlorine
levels is not required.  While most hot tub companies recommend setting the pH at 7.4 to 7.8, the
enzymes in Nova Spa work best at the 7.8 to 8.4 range (8.0 is ideal).  I can usually look at my spa and
see if it needs maintenance.  I will sometimes use a pH test strip after replenishing the water that has
evaporated, just to check, but the pH has stayed stable.

Using the Penetrating Spa Cleanser
I tried our new cleanser on my spa that I owned for 2 years now. I was amazed at how dirty the water
got.  My water appeared clean and clear before adding the cleanser.  I turned my temperature setting
to the lowest setting (59 degrees) and let it run for 2 days.  Be sure to keep the temperature below 75
degrees, because heat will kill the microbes that are doing the work.  I highly recommend you refill
the tub and run the pumps on high as directed in the instructions.  I made the mistake of trying to do
a quick flush of the tub, rather than a full refill, rinse, and drain a second time.  It was the end of
January and I was cold, so this is best done in warmer months.  I didn't get all the gunk flushed out of
the plumbing, and had cloudy water for a few days.  A water clarifier cleaned it up, but I don't want
you to have the same experience.    Take the filter out when cleaning the spa with the Penetrating
Spa Cleanser.  I placed the filter in the bottom of the spa and let the microbes clean the filter too.
